RV Kitchen Storage That Actually Works: The IKEA SUNNERSTA Adjustable Rack

Small spaces need smart storage: Sharing our love for the IKEA SUNNERSTA rack system and components as a perfect starting point for RV kitchen storage. You can also watch our decision/installation video at the bottom of this post!

If you live or travel in a small space, you already know that the tiniest upgrades can make the biggest difference. That is especially true in our 22 foot E-Pro travel trailer, where every inch has to earn its keep.

Behind our sink was one of those awkward spots. Too small for a cabinet, too visible to ignore, and always collecting random items during trips since it is also part of the entryway. We needed RV kitchen storage that was versatile, sturdy, and not permanent. Enter the IKEA SUNNERSTA system!

Why Our RV Kitchen Storage Needed to Be Flexible

We were looking for something that checked a few important boxes:

  • Works in a very small space, with a limited footprint needed
  • Can change based on the trip or as we learn what we actually need handy
  • No drilling or permanent install
  • Lightweight and sturdy enough to bounce along down the highway
  • Affordable!

The SUNNERSTA adjustable rack fit all of that. It is designed for small kitchens, and it works surprisingly well as travel trailer or RV kitchen storage too.

This is the base rack we started with, priced as I type this at $19.99 Canadian:

A small bit of assembly adds two handy hooks on either side and three rounded rails to hold various accessories in a versatile modular system. Two tension rod pieces extend and are snugly secured into position with tiny screws (one of which I lost in the sink during installation).

Assembly and installation took less than 15 minutes.

Then after getting it installed, I taped the allen/hex key to the rack itself so I wouldn’t lose it.

How We Built Out Our RV Kitchen Storage System

Tripling as the entryway “drop zone”, dishwashing space, as well as catch-all for general quick access items, we knew we needed different kinds of holders to play with to find what worked for us. (We are new to trailering after all!)

Our total bill was $30.94. Here’s what we added (items linked in case it helps!):

Plastic HOOKS (white) $0.99/5 pack

(We also found that the KUNGSFORS $4.00/5 pack metal hooks we had lying around also fit, plus they had a better hook angle to keep things from bouncing off)

A small 9 7/8″ SHELF that still allowed space on the same bar $2.99
(They also have a full length 14 3/8″ SHELF option $3.99)

Small CONTAINER (comes in white or beige) $0.99

(We bought two)

A hanging mini NEREBY BAG (not part of the SUNNERSTA system but works well) $4.99

Because everything hangs or lifts off, we were able to change the layout multiple times in the first few trips to make it work best, and it gives us the ability to change and upgrade as needed.

Why This RV Kitchen Storage Works Behind the Sink

That space behind our sink was prime real estate in our tiny trailer, but baskets and hooks only were not organizing everything for us. We needed storage that went up and make use of the vertical space.

This SUNNERSTA RV kitchen storage setup lets us:

  • Keep dishwashing items within reach, but out of the sink and off the counter
  • Hold entryway drop zone items like wallet, keys, and sunglasses
  • Contain quick access items like dog poop bags and flashlights so they are not lost in a drawer when we need them most!
  • Gives a home for some awkward items like the extender grabby claw, fly swatter, and bug net (all of which we use a surprising amount of time)
  • Adjust what lives there from trip to trip or even mid trip
  • Wipe the counter clean or dry without disturbing anything!

Plus, if we ever decide we hate it, it all comes down without any damage.

Non-Permanent and Renter Friendly

One of our biggest priorities in any sort of RV kitchen storage was avoiding permanent changes. We did not want to drill into walls or commit to something we could not undo.

The SUNNERSTA rack is light enough that it works with removable tension springs and does not put a lot of stress on the countertop and overhead cabinet. That makes it ideal for trailers, rentals, or anyone who wants flexibility.

The Biggest Win: It Changes With Us

What we love most about this setup is that it is not locked into one configuration. The same space works differently depending on what we need that camping trip, and can adapt with us.

In a tiny trailer, that kind of flexibility makes a huge difference.

Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely. This is one of those small upgrades that quietly makes vacations easier.

If you are looking for RV kitchen storage that is affordable, flexible, and removable, this is an easy place to start.

Small space. Smart storage. Big difference.
